Beach Reads and Summer Movies for Teens and Adults
It’s summer and you know what that means – family vacations. For books to help plan your trip or for a good read, our libraries can help you relax whether you are lying on the beach, swinging in a hammock or just sitting out on the porch.
Our adult librarians have curated several booklists for your reading pleasure. Stop by the library and check out one of these new novels that can whisk you away to another time and place. Or if you’re packing light and interested in eBooks and audiobooks, check out these titles from our Overdrive collection. After a day in the sun, spend those warm nights watching these summer-related movies with Kanopy, our free video-streaming service.

Take a Bite out of Shark Week
Celebrate Sharks and Find a Book You Can Really Sink Your Teeth Into
For more than 30 years, Discovery Channel has celebrated Shark Week at the end of July. Every summer, they share compelling insights on some of the world’s most unique shark species that have been around for 400 million years! This year’s theme is “So Good You Could Scream.” The action starts on July 28 on the Discovery Channel but the Library has information on sharks all year long.
Because these animals can be misunderstood, the Library is your source for information to learn more about them. Our children’s librarians have created this booklist dedicated to young readers Books with Bite! Adults and teens can also find a variety of scary and thrilling tales about these masters of the deep.
It’s Showtime for Teen Bands!
SCCLD to Host Battle of the Bands Contest
The Santa Clara County Library District is hosting its first ever Teen Battle of the Bands contest. Local teens will compete in a live show for title of Best Group. Bands will rock out on Saturday, July 27 from 2-5 pm in the amphitheater of Milpitas Library.
The idea for the event originated from SCCLD’s teen librarians, who wanted to give local bands a chance to perform in front of a large audience with a professional sound system to better broadcast their music. The event is part of SCCLD’s Summer Reading Program It’s Showtime at Your Library!
The bands will perform a live set (up to 20 minutes) in front of a panel of judges and audience. The bands will be scored on their stage presentation, band synchronization, time management, song quality, stage management, and originality. The winners will receive cash gift cards as prizes, with $300 going to the first place finishers, $200 for second place, and $100 for third.

How many books have you and your family read this summer? Do you need a little incentive? SCCLD wants everyone reading and having fun this summer! As our Summer Reading program, It’s Showtime At Your Library, reaches its halfway point, let’s log some books toward the goal of 200,000 books read TOGETHER.
Our partner, Monster Jam, wants to reward the super readers out there by giving them tickets to the next big show coming to San Jose on August 6. Make sure you have logged all the books you’ve read in Beanstack to be entered into the drawing for Family Packs to the show. The more books you log, the more chances you have to win. Read and log by July 15 to be eligible to win the Monster Jam 4-packs.
That’s not all the winning coming your way with SCCLD this summer. All readers have chances toward great experiences, including tickets for your family to enjoy plays, museums and the ultimate prize -- a 49ers Preseason Game Day Experience at Levi’s Stadium! To be entered to win these great prizes, you have to read and log at least five books and complete an activity.
An activity could be getting a library card, checking out a CD or DVD, asking a librarian for a good book, listening to an audiobook, streaming music or movies from sccl.org or attending a library program. Kanopy Kids Now Offering Unlimited Streaming
Kanopy is just one of the free video streaming services for kids from the Library
Kanopy Kids now offers unlimited video streaming for people young and young at heart. Log in free with your library card number. This curated collection offers children’s movies including classic films and movies for the whole family, animated storybooks, TV shows, language learning videos, as well as non-feature films on a variety of topics including history and science.
Key titles include Arthur, Babar, Franklin & Friends, Maya The Bee, Wild Kratts, Little Pim, and Nigerian-animated Bino & Fino. The collection also highlights TV shows from PBS Kids including Peg + Cat, Super WHY!, Caillou, and Splash & Bubbles. There’s also a great collection of animated shorts featuring historical figures and events produced by Weston Woods. Kids can learn about the lives of Ella Fitzgerald, Nelson Mandela and Helen Keller to name a few.
Kanopy Kids is available for iOS, Android, Apple TV, Android TV, Chromecast, Roku, Kindle Fire, and Fire TV. Simply download the Kanopy app and then toggle over to Kanopy Kids within the app.
We also offer other free educational video services in our online library. Students can use Brainfuse’s Summer Skills camp to read lessons, watch educational videos and take practice tests so that they go back to school ready. There’s also CK-12, which offers free online learning tools including digital textbooks, short videos, and practice questions for students K-12 in math, science, and English.

If you’re into cooking (and eating), then summer is a gastronomic delight! In fact, many foods and cooking methods stake a claim in July – National Grilling Month, Hot Dog Month, Ice Cream Month, Watermelon Month and Deli Salad Month!
Hot dog season is in full effect, with Americans typically eating 7 billion hot dogs from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Ahead of your next family barbecue, potluck or 4th of July celebration, check out these titles and find ways to spice up your summer foods.
Gilroy Library to Host Mini Maker Fair
20+ Makers, Activities, Special Events Planned
For the first time ever, Gilroy Library is hosting the Gilroy Mini Maker Faire. If you are not familiar with Maker Faires, it’s a gathering of “makers” (artists, crafters, scientists and engineers) presenting their hobbies, experiments and projects in a family-friendly setting. More than 20 makers are scheduled to showcase their crafts on Saturday, July 13 from 11 am-3 pm at the Gilroy Library.
The Walt Disney Family Museum will come out to do an art activity, then turn that art into short movies using their multiplane cameras. Other makers include a 12-year-old LEGO engineer who will teach participants how to build LEGO candy dispensers. Cupertinker Newark Space Group will highlight their inMoove Humanoid robot comedy show (built by a teenager), and interactive trees and hill climbing robots.
Gilroy Library is also providing demonstrations of tools and resources that are part of the Gilroy Library Makerspace programming, including 3D printers, Dremel Laser Cutters and Silhouette Cameo.
Visitors can also make their own creations through a number of activities for people of all ages, including squishy circuits for kids to soldering and woodburning for adults. There will also be two food trucks on hand, so families can make an afternoon of the event. People can get updates about the Mini Maker Faire at gilroy.makerfaire.com.
The event is free and everyone is invited. People who enter this drawing are eligible to win a Maker Prize Pack, full of tools to get people making!
