Pre-Literacy Tip: It's Never Too Early to Read to Your Baby
It’s never too early to read to your baby - in fact while still in utero (from the second trimester) a baby can hear distinct sounds from outside the womb. So with a favorite book, read to your baby before she is born.
Reading to baby before she is born will provide a early beginning to the benefits that come with reading - language, rhythm, and the cozy feeling of being read to by someone who loves them. Also, the sound of mother’s or father's voice will become more familiar to her so that when she is born, the new baby will have more to recognize in their voices. If you read a particular book regularly to baby in utero, she may respond to the story after she is born and may well be calmed by hearing it again. Find a book you love - that has a rhythm and cadence - like Brown Bear, Brown Bear by Bill Martin, Jr or Good Night Moon by Margaret Wise Brown - and it will be like a song you sing to your baby, a lullaby to build dreams upon.
