National Pet Day 2024

Thursday, April 11, 2024 is National Pet Day!  From the furry to the scaly, the hoppy to the slithery, a pet can be a special part of a child's life.  According to a survey by the American Veterinary Medical Association, the majority of pet owners consider their pets to be members of their families.  Whether you already own a pet, are considering adding one to your family, or just really love animals, check out our National Pet Day 2024 booklist for some fun books about pets to read with your children.  Perhaps, owning a traditional pet isn’t an option for you right now.  We also have stories about some more obscure pets (including rocks, plants, unicorns, and even a potato)!

There's more to do online too. Read magazines like "Animal Tales" and "Choosing Your Pets" in Libby Magazines for Kids & Teens, or find fun facts about pets and other animals in Scholastic Go!

Children can also get their pet fix by attending our Reading Buddies program!  At these events, children can buddy up with a specially-trained therapy dog or cat and read to their furry audience.
