Santa Clara County Library Computers Back Online

Tuesday, July 22, 2008

All library computers and remote Internet access to libraries in the Santa Clara County Library system are back online. County Librarian, Melinda Cervantes apologizes for any inconvenience the interruption in online computer services caused to those visiting County Libraries or attempting to login to Library online services over the last few days.

On Saturday, July 19 Library staff quickly identified a hardware problem, and immediately ordered the necessary part; unfortunately the company did not ship until Monday. Coincidentally, a commercial DSL line went down late Monday morning and remained out of service for 16 hours leaving the Library without Internet service and telephones until Tuesday morning. Library staff has worked around the clock to resolve this problem and at Noon on Tuesday all computer and telephone services were fully restored.

Library patrons who visited any of the libraries in the County Library system on Saturday, Sunday and Monday were able to browse books, newspapers, magazines, CDs, DVDs and other materials, attend summer reading club programs and also checkout library materials. Library staff was ready and able to assist patrons who walked into the library and Circulation Services located in the Library Administration Offices assisted patrons who telephoned with questions about their accounts.

The Santa Clara County Library would like to thank library patrons for their patience and understanding and also recognize the San Jose Mercury News and KLIV-1590 radio for helping to alert the public about this interruption of library service. Cervantes points out that even in a “technology dependent” society, it is refreshing to note that all County Libraries were open during this period and knowledgeable librarians were ready to assist patrons using books, the “original technology” to answer information and reading requests.
