Distinguished Authors Series Launching Next Month
Three well-known writers will share stories about key works
The Santa Clara County Library District (SCCLD) is proud to present a very special series of events. Starting in October, SCCLD will be hosting a trio of acclaimed best-selling authors who will give talks about their writing process and how they crafted their works through meticulous and detailed research and reporting.
The series kicks off at the Morgan Hill’s Community and Cultural Center on October 22 with Sonia Nazario, author of award-winning book, Enrique’s Journey. This story tells of a Honduran boy struggling to find his mother in the U.S.
The second event will be held on October 30 featuring John Carreyrou, New York Times best-selling author of Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup, at De Anza’s Visual & Performing Arts Center. Carreyrou received two Pulitzer prizes for his investigative reporting at the Wall Street Journal where he uncovered the scandal behind Theranos, the subject of Bad Blood.
The final presenter will be Susan Orlean, best-selling author who will talk about The Library Book at the Campbell Heritage Theatre on December 11. The Library Book explores the history, power, and future of libraries, while delving into the mysterious fire that nearly destroyed the Los Angeles Public Library in 1986.
This is a rare opportunity to hear from leading authors about the craft of writing and how they went about creating these memorable stories.

Recap: Summer Reading 2019
It’s Showtime at Your Library! is in the books, and you won't believe the totals
September marks the end of our Summer Reading Program, It’s Showtime at Your Library! We’ve had another successful year and wanted to share some of the highlights, including surpassing our target of reading 200,000 books together. Great job everyone!
Between SCCLD’s Summer Reading and 1,000 Books Before 6 programs, more than 255,000 books were read between June and August. Who took part? Around 28,000 people, with first graders being the most popular age group to sign up for It’s Showtime at your Library! Special credit to Milpitas Library, with more than 6,900 people – 8.6% of the community -- enrolled in the program!
Here’s what people were reading. The most popular books for all ages was Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, not to mention the rest of the series. The most popular book for adults was Becoming by Michelle Obama. Our youngest readers’ most popular book was The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.
Thanks to our partners, we awarded 45 generous prizes, including passes to the 49ers Museum at Levi’s Stadium, Monster Jam and Gilroy Gardens. Plus, children in the program received thousands of books, In-N-Out Burger certificates and meals from Chipotle.

The Library is a Student’s After School One-Stop Shop
Get homework help and more student resources
Students are back in school and the Library has many free resources to help with projects, reports and other homework. Stop by any of our locations to look through reference books, biographies, maps or access online articles and eBooks. Librarians can also show students how to access their eAccount and navigate the Student Portal to get help at home or school.
One particularly helpful resource is Brainfuse Help Now. It provides free homework and writing assistance, live tutoring and test prep services in English and Spanish all online. Tutors are available every day from 1-10 pm for one-on-one assistance.
Our libraries in South County are also serving free after school snacks to students. Gilroy Library’s snack service runs Tuesday through Thursday at 3 pm in the Nest (Children’s Activity Room). Morgan Hill Library is providing snacks and activities on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-4 pm in the program room. Learn more about the snack programs.

This is a great way to view how our society evolved over the various decades. History buffs can study a particular event, person, or topic, e.g. Feminism, the first Moon Landing, the Vietnam War, and so on. Read in-depth essays and articles as they were written during a particular period in history. You will also find lots of literary material featuring the life and works of such literary greats as Ernest Hemingway, Ray Bradbury, P.G. Wodehouse, William Faulkner and Philip Roth.
National Hispanic Heritage Month
Celebrating the history and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx Americans
For over fifty years, U.S. presidents have recognized the middle of September until the middle of October as National Hispanic Heritage Month. Starting with the independence days from Spain of 5 Latin American countries and ending shortly after Columbus Day, which is also known as Indigenous People’s Day, the month is intended to promote the sharing of history, including the many contributions of Latinx (Latino and Latina) people. This year’s theme is “A History of Serving our Nation,” which nods to the more than 1 million members of the community who have been part of the U.S. military.
Experience song and culture at fun family events this month at the library. Bilingual performers will share their talents at Family Fiesta de Música.
The Library has compiled booklists for children of all ages and YA/adults, as well as a selection of eBooks and Audiobooks, around the month.
Voter Registration Day, New County Voting System
SCCLD libraries to host voter sign-up groups on September 24
Our representative democracy needs the participation of voters in order to ensure that the people are properly represented and our elected leaders prioritize the issues that matter most to us. September 17 is U.S. Constitution and Citizenship Day. A week later, SCCLD will once again be hosting nonprofit groups including the League of Women Voters at our eight libraries on Tuesday, September 24. They will be offering help with voter registration for anyone not already registered to vote locally. For those who recently turned 18, or who might have moved and not had a chance to re-register, this is an easy way to sign up to vote.
Speaking of voting, the County of Santa Clara’s Registrar of Voters is preparing to launch a new Election Administration Plan, to be implemented in March of 2020. The update to the current voting system includes new voting equipment, which combine the ease of electronic voting with the security of a paper printout that voters can review before depositing their vote. The current voting machines are nearly 20 years old. You can find out more about these changes at an upcoming public meeting on September 4 at the County Government Center at 70 W. Hedding St., San José 95110. You can also read about the Plan and how it seeks to comply the Voter’s Choice Act, available in English, Chinese, Spanish, Vietnamese, and five other languages.
Local Family Shares Their Story about Lewy Body Dementia Awareness
SCCLD to host film screenings and discussions at all libraries
Lewy body dementia is the second most common type of progressive dementia after Alzheimer’s disease dementia, according to the Mayo Clinic, with as many as 1.3 million Americans suffering from it.
One local couple, Sue and Chuck Berghoff of Morgan Hill, want to educate the community about the condition. The documentary film, Sue’s Story, takes a look at the rise of dementia in a world unprepared to deal with it. The film takes viewers on a journey with Sue, who has Lewy body dementia. She is determined to bring about change, so other dementia patients can live their lives with purpose, dignity, and hope.
SCCLD will host screenings of Sue’s Story at all of our libraries. Meet Sue and her husband, watch their story unfold, then participate in a Q&A discussion with the Berghoffs and guest speakers from healthcare, medical research, and older adult services. We welcome you to ask questions, share your family experiences with dementia, and learn what is being done in our County to change things for the better.
Morgan Hill Library is screening the documentary on Tuesday, September 24 at 6:30 pm. Gilroy Library will host the event on Monday, September 30 at 6:30 pm. Both events are free. Our other libraries will host screenings throughout the fall. Learn more at sccl.org/events.
