Pick a Collection:

  • Libby is the new OverDrive app that makes downloading eBooks and Audiobooks to your smartphone or tablet easier.

      Tap the Libby menu icon  > Help & Support > A Problem and fill out the online form.

    You will need

    How it works

    1.  When you first access the app, Libby will ask you if you already have a library card.
      • Tap Yes if you already have a card, or,
      • Tap Not Yet and Libby will walk you through the steps of getting a physical card.
    2. Next it's time to connect to the Library's digital collection.
      • If your GPS is enabled and you don't mind Libby knowing your location, tap Yes, Guess My Library.
      • If you prefer searching for your Library, tap I'll Search For A Library and enter your library name, city, or zip code.
    3.  Next Libby wants to know your primary reading preference.
      • Tap I'll Mostly Read On A Kindle, or,
      • Tap I'll Mostly Read In Libby.
    4. Next tap Enter Library Account Details. Enter your library card number and PIN and Sign In.
    5. Tap Next to access the Library's digital collection. Note, if you want to add another Library system or another library card (e.g. a family member's account), tap the Libby icon on the upper right-hand corner and follow the instructions to add additional information. Tap Hide to close the Libby settings. 
    6. Back on the Homepage tap +Preferences if you want to set up additional parameters or preferences that you want to see.Tap Apply Preferences to save the changes you've made.
    7. Search and browse for titles.
      • If the title is unavailable, tap the Place Hold button to reserve a copy.  When a hold becomes available, you will receive a notification and have 3 days to pick up the hold. 
      • If a title is already available, tap the Borrow button, then tap Read Book or Play Audiobook. If you had set your reading preferences to Kindle, you can select the option Read with Kindle and follow the prompts to sign into your Amazon account and then sync it to your Kindle eReader or Tablet.
      • Note, you can always access your holds and borrowed items from the Homepage. Just tap Shelf at the bottom of the screen. The Holds tab shows the progress of your holds. And the Loans tab lists all the titles you currently have borrowed. 
      • To adjust your reading settings, tap the center of the screen to bring up the reading interface. You can tap on the menu icon () to bring up tools like Search, Chapters, adjust the text size, etc.
      • You can tap the dial icon to increase or decrease the reading speed, tap the moon icon to turn on a sleep timer, press and drag the circle on the timeline to skip forward or back, and press the play button to start listening. Additional settings are also found by tapping the menu icon ().

    Transferring to your Kindle eReader or Tablet

    Take the steps below if you did not set your primary reading preference to Kindle in the above instructions in step #3.

    1. Go to the Libby menu in the upper right-hand corner  > Set Up Libby > Select Reading Devices.
    2. Under Reading Device, tap the underlined in Libby link.
    3. Tap on my Kindle.

    After you change this setting:

    • You'll see a Send to Kindle link immediately after borrowing a Kindle-compatible book.
    • You'll still need to select Send to Kindle to finish sending each book to your Kindle.
    • Books won't automatically download to Libby, regardless of your "Automatic Downloads" setting. 

    Additional information

    • The default lending period is 21 days.
    • After receiving notification that a hold is available, you can:
      1. Borrow the title within 3 days.
      2. Choose "deliver later" and pass the book to the next person in line for a self-selected period. After the "deliver later" date, you will receive the next available copy.
      3. Cancel the hold.

    Note, if you take no action during the hold pickup window, the "deliver after seven days" option will be automatically applied as a one-time courtesy. If you take no action a second time, your hold will be canceled. 

    • After the lending period, the eBook/audiobook will simply expire from your device.
    • To manage your loans (return loan early or renew loan), tap Shelf and then Manage Loan.
    • No fines, no fees.
    • 10 checkouts / 12 holds.

    How it works

    1. Access the SimplyE app.
    2. Tap the menu icon ( ). 
    3. Tap on Settings.
    4. Tap on Accounts.
    5. On the upper-right hand corner, tap the Plus (+) sign.
    6. This brings up a list of participating libraries. Choose "Santa Clara County Library District" from the menu.
    7. The app adds "Santa Clara County Library District" and tap on the library name and enter your library card number and PIN to access the collection.
    8. Next, return to the homepage by selecting the build-in "Back button" and under the label "The SimplyE Collection," tap the pull-down menu, select "Santa Clara County Library District" and this will open up our library collection.
    9. Search and browse for titles.
      • To search for a specific author or title: Tap the search icon in the upper right corner and enter the author or book name.Tap More... to view all books in a category. When viewing all books in a category, you can sort by Author, Availability, or Collection. You can also sort books in the My Books and Reservations tabs. 
      • If the title is unavailable, tap the Reserve button to reserve a copy. 
      • If a title is already available, tap the Get button, then tap the Read button to read the eBook or to play the Audiobook.
      • Note, you can always access your holds and borrowed items from the Homepage. Tap the menu icon ( ) and then My Books to access all the titles you currently have checked out, or tap the menu icon ( ) and then Reservations to show the progress of your holds.
      • To adjust your reading settings, tap the Aa button on the upper right-hand corner. This will allow you to adjust the brightness and text size, etc. for your eBook.
      • For your Audiobook, you can rewind or fast forward by 15 seconds. You can tap the half moon icon to set a sleep timer. You can access the Table of Contents by selecting menu icon. Here you can jump ahead or go back a chapter.  

    Additional Information

    • The default lending period is 21 days.
    • After the lending period, all borrowed digital titles are automatically returned at the end of their lending periods, so you never have to worry about late fees (exceptions include titles in the public domain, which can stay on your SimplyE bookshelf indefinitely).
    • To return a title early: Go to My Books, tap the title and tap Return
    • No fines, no fees.
    • 10 checkouts / 12 holds

    How It Works

    • Sign in with your username and password.   
      • Note: first time users need to register for a HyRead account. Using your web browser, please access the HyRead platform through our website at https://sccld.org/resource/hyread-chinese/ (click the title to access the HyRead platform). Once you’re inside the HyRead platform, select the account icon (Account Icon) and follow the "Register" link to register for a new account. Then return to the app and sign in with your new credentials. 
    • Search and select an eBook or eMagazine title.
    • Tap the Borrow button. (You may need to place a hold on popular items.)
    • Go to your Bookshelf and tap Download to download the title to your device. Tap to read.
    • Multimedia content is outlined with a blue box. Tap the blue box to launch content directly from the page. Or, tap the audio () or video (media icon in the menu bar to get a playlist of media embedded in the title.
    • To return your title early, go to your Bookshelf, tap the ellipsis () at the bottom of the book or magazine image, and choose the Return button.

    Additional Information for eBooks

    • The default lending period is 21 days.
    • After the lending period, the eBook will simply expire from your account.
    • No fines, no fees.
    • If an eBook is checked out, you may request to be placed in the holds queue.

    • The default loan period for eMagazines with simultaneous multi-user access is 14 days. There are no limits to the number of checkouts and holds for these titles. However, the titles below are only available for a 7-day checkout, and the circulation policy for these titles is 10 checkouts / 12 holds:

    5. Tap Display to read the book now in your browser, or choose Download to read the book offline within in the app.  Downloaded books will sync across devices as long as you have the Odilo app installed.
    6. To read your downloaded title, tap the hamburger icon () and choose Downloads.  Tap the cover of the book you want to read.
    7. To return your title early, go to the Downloads page.  In the upper right-hand corner, tap the three vertical dots (  ) and choose Return Loan.

    You will need

    How it works

    1.  When you first access the app, Libby will ask you if you already have a library card.
      • Tap Yes if you already have a card, or,
      • Tap Not Yet and Libby will walk you through the steps of getting a physical card.
    2. Next it's time to connect to the Library's digital collection.
      • If your GPS is enabled and you don't mind Libby knowing your location, tap Yes, Guess My Library.
      • If you prefer searching for your Library, tap I'll Search For A Library and enter your library name, city, or zip code.
    3.  Next Libby wants to know your primary reading preference.
      • Tap I'll Mostly Read On A Kindle, or,
      • Tap I'll Mostly Read In Libby.
    4. Next tap Enter Library Account Details. Enter your library card number and PIN and Sign In.
    5. Tap Next to access the Library's digital collection. Note, if you want to add another Library system or another library card (e.g. a family member's account), tap the Libby icon on the upper right-hand corner and follow the instructions to add additional information. Tap Hide to close the Libby settings. 
    6. Back on the Homepage tap +Preferences if you want to set up additional parameters or preferences that you want to see.Tap Apply Preferences to save the changes you've made.
    7. Search and browse for titles.
      • If the title is unavailable, tap the Place Hold button to reserve a copy.  When a hold becomes available, you will receive a notification and have 3 days to pick up the hold. 
      • If a title is already available, tap the Borrow button, then tap Read Book or Play Audiobook. If you had set your reading preferences to Kindle, you can select the option Read with Kindle and follow the prompts to sign into your Amazon account and then sync it to your Kindle eReader or Tablet.
      • Note, you can always access your holds and borrowed items from the Homepage. Just tap Shelf at the bottom of the screen. The Holds tab shows the progress of your holds. And the Loans tab lists all the titles you currently have borrowed. 
      • To adjust your reading settings, tap the center of the screen to bring up the reading interface. You can tap on the menu icon () to bring up tools like Search, Chapters, adjust the text size, etc.
      • You can tap the dial icon to increase or decrease the reading speed, tap the moon icon to turn on a sleep timer, press and drag the circle on the timeline to skip forward or back, and press the play button to start listening. Additional settings are also found by tapping the menu icon ().

    Transferring to your Kindle eReader or Tablet

    Take the steps below if you did not set your primary reading preference to Kindle in the above instructions in step #3.

    1. Go to the Libby menu in the upper right-hand corner  > Set Up Libby > Select Reading Devices.
    2. Under Reading Device, tap the underlined in Libby link.
    3. Tap on my Kindle.

    After you change this setting:

    • You'll see a Send to Kindle link immediately after borrowing a Kindle-compatible book.
    • You'll still need to select Send to Kindle to finish sending each book to your Kindle.
    • Books won't automatically download to Libby, regardless of your "Automatic Downloads" setting.

      1. Borrow the title within 3 days.

    3. Select Read now with Kindle to complete checkout on Amazon's website and send the book to your Kindle device or Kindle reading app.
      • If you're not already signed into Amazon, select Get library book. You'll be prompted to sign in. After you sign in, choose the device or reading app where you'd like to send the book you borrowed, then select Continue
      • If you're signed into Amazon, select a device or reading app from the Deliver to: drop-down menu, then select Get library book. The book will be sent to your Kindle device or reading app. 
    4. If you'd like to return a Kindle book before your lending period ends, use these steps:
      • On Amazon's website, go to your Manage Your Content and Devices page.
      • Find the title in the Your Content list, then select .
      • Select Return this book in the pop-up widow.
      • Select Yes to confirm and return the book. 

    Note:

    • Some titles most commonly picture books, read-alongs, and graphic novels aren't supported on certain Kindle devices or reading apps. To see whether a Kindle Book is incompatible with your device or app, look for a Kindle restrictions link under Formats on the eBook's details page.
    • Your Kindle eReader must have a Wi-Fi internet connection to download library Kindle Books from Amazon. If you don't have a Wi-Fi connection, you'll need to transfer the title via USB.
    • Once a book is on your Kindle device or reading app, you can open it from your device or app's home screen and read it just like any other Kindle Book.

      • To add another card, tap on View Cards.
      • Tap +Add New.
      • Users will be prompted to login again using the card information they would like to add.

      • Use the steps below to authorize Adobe Digital Editions.
        • If you aren't prompted to authorize Adobe Digital Editions for the first time you open it, go to Help > Authorize Computer.
        • Select OverDrive (recommended) or Adobe ID from the eBook Vendor drop-down menu.
        • Enter your email address (or Adobe ID) and password, then select Authorize. If you have difficulties with your Adobe ID, you can visit the Adobe website and sign in to manage your Adobe ID. If you forgot your Adobe ID, you can try resetting it from there. 
      • Use the steps below to transfer eBooks to your eReader:
        • Connect your eReader into your computer using a USB cable.
        • In Adobe Digital Edition, make sure you're in Library view. Your eReader should show up under Devices.You may need to accept a file-transfer prompt on your eReader in order for it to appear in Adobe Digital Editions.
        • Click on an eBook, then drag it to your device. Note: During the transfer process, your eReader will be automatically authorized with the same Adobe ID or OverDrive account you used on your computer.
        • Once the transfer is complete, you can disconnect your device and start reading.

  • Libby is the new OverDrive app that makes downloading eBooks and Audiobooks to your smartphone or tablet easier.

      Tap the Libby menu icon  > Help & Support > A Problem and fill out the online form.

    You will need

    How it works

    1.  When you first access the app, Libby will ask you if you already have a library card.
      • Tap Yes if you already have a card, or,
      • Tap Not Yet and Libby will walk you through the steps of getting a physical card.
    2. Next it's time to connect to the Library's digital collection.
      • If your GPS is enabled and you don't mind Libby knowing your location, tap Yes, Guess My Library.
      • If you prefer searching for your Library, tap I'll Search For A Library and enter your library name, city, or zip code.
    3.  Next Libby wants to know your primary reading preference.
      • Tap I'll Mostly Read On A Kindle, or,
      • Tap I'll Mostly Read In Libby.
    4. Next tap Enter Library Account Details. Enter your library card number and PIN and Sign In.
    5. Tap Next to access the Library's digital collection. Note, if you want to add another Library system or another library card (e.g. a family member's account), tap the Libby icon on the upper right-hand corner and follow the instructions to add additional information. Tap Hide to close the Libby settings. 
    6. Back on the Homepage tap +Preferences if you want to set up additional parameters or preferences that you want to see.Tap Apply Preferences to save the changes you've made.
    7. Search and browse for titles.
      • If the title is unavailable, tap the Place Hold button to reserve a copy.  When a hold becomes available, you will receive a notification and have 3 days to pick up the hold. 
      • If a title is already available, tap the Borrow button, then tap Read Book or Play Audiobook. If you had set your reading preferences to Kindle, you can select the option Read with Kindle and follow the prompts to sign into your Amazon account and then sync it to your Kindle eReader or Tablet.
      • Note, you can always access your holds and borrowed items from the Homepage. Just tap Shelf at the bottom of the screen. The Holds tab shows the progress of your holds. And the Loans tab lists all the titles you currently have borrowed. 
      • To adjust your reading settings, tap the center of the screen to bring up the reading interface. You can tap on the menu icon () to bring up tools like Search, Chapters, adjust the text size, etc.
      • You can tap the dial icon to increase or decrease the reading speed, tap the moon icon to turn on a sleep timer, press and drag the circle on the timeline to skip forward or back, and press the play button to start listening. Additional settings are also found by tapping the menu icon ().

    Transferring to your Kindle eReader or Tablet

    Take the steps below if you did not set your primary reading preference to Kindle in the above instructions in step #3.

    1. Go to the Libby menu in the upper right-hand corner  > Set Up Libby > Select Reading Devices.
    2. Under Reading Device, tap the underlined in Libby link.
    3. Tap on my Kindle.

    After you change this setting:

    • You'll see a Send to Kindle link immediately after borrowing a Kindle-compatible book.
    • You'll still need to select Send to Kindle to finish sending each book to your Kindle.
    • Books won't automatically download to Libby, regardless of your "Automatic Downloads" setting. 

    Additional information

    • The default lending period is 21 days.
    • After receiving notification that a hold is available, you can:
      1. Borrow the title within 3 days.
      2. Choose "deliver later" and pass the book to the next person in line for a self-selected period. After the "deliver later" date, you will receive the next available copy.
      3. Cancel the hold.

    Note, if you take no action during the hold pickup window, the "deliver after seven days" option will be automatically applied as a one-time courtesy. If you take no action a second time, your hold will be canceled. 

    • After the lending period, the eBook/audiobook will simply expire from your device.
    • To manage your loans (return loan early or renew loan), tap Shelf and then Manage Loan.
    • No fines, no fees.
    • 10 checkouts / 12 holds.
  • You Will Need

    How It Works

    • Launch the app and add a Library by tapping on the hamburger icon (). Select Santa Clara County Library District as your default library.
    • Sign in with your username and password.   
      • Note: first time users need to register for a HyRead account. Using your web browser, please access the HyRead platform through our website at https://sccld.org/resource/hyread-chinese/ (click the title to access the HyRead platform). Once you’re inside the HyRead platform, select the account icon (Account Icon) and follow the "Register" link to register for a new account. Then return to the app and sign in with your new credentials. 
    • Search and select an eBook or eMagazine title.
    • Tap the Borrow button. (You may need to place a hold on popular items.)
    • Go to your Bookshelf and tap Download to download the title to your device. Tap to read.
    • Multimedia content is outlined with a blue box. Tap the blue box to launch content directly from the page. Or, tap the audio () or video (media icon in the menu bar to get a playlist of media embedded in the title.
    • To return your title early, go to your Bookshelf, tap the ellipsis () at the bottom of the book or magazine image, and choose the Return button.

    Additional Information for eBooks

    • The default lending period is 21 days.
    • After the lending period, the eBook will simply expire from your account.
    • No fines, no fees.
    • If an eBook is checked out, you may request to be placed in the holds queue.

    Additional Information for eMagazines

    • The default loan period for eMagazines with simultaneous multi-user access is 14 days. There are no limits to the number of checkouts and holds for these titles. However, the titles below are only available for a 7-day checkout, and the circulation policy for these titles is 10 checkouts / 12 holds:

    How It Works

    1. Access the Library's OverDrive collection on your computer.
    2. Borrow a title (you'll need to sign in to complete this step).
    3. After you borrow a title, you can choose to either:
      • Click Read now in browser to open OverDrive Read, or
      • Download EPUB or PDF eBooks to your computer (first, you'll need to install and authorize Adobe Digital Editions), then transfer them to a compatible eReader e.g. NOOK, Kobo, etc. Note, newer eReaders may already have OverDrive built into their device so you can borrow and download eBooks directly.  
      • Use the steps below to authorize Adobe Digital Editions.
        • If you aren't prompted to authorize Adobe Digital Editions for the first time you open it, go to Help > Authorize Computer.
        • Select OverDrive (recommended) or Adobe ID from the eBook Vendor drop-down menu.
        • Enter your email address (or Adobe ID) and password, then select Authorize. If you have difficulties with your Adobe ID, you can visit the Adobe website and sign in to manage your Adobe ID. If you forgot your Adobe ID, you can try resetting it from there. 
      • Use the steps below to transfer eBooks to your eReader:
        • Connect your eReader into your computer using a USB cable.
        • In Adobe Digital Edition, make sure you're in Library view. Your eReader should show up under Devices.You may need to accept a file-transfer prompt on your eReader in order for it to appear in Adobe Digital Editions.
        • Click on an eBook, then drag it to your device. Note: During the transfer process, your eReader will be automatically authorized with the same Adobe ID or OverDrive account you used on your computer.
        • Once the transfer is complete, you can disconnect your device and start reading.

    Additional Information

    • The default lending period is 21 days.

    • For Windows 7, 8 (excluding Windows 8 RT), 10, install the cloudLibrary app here.

    How It Works

    1. Launch the app and select your country, state, and library and click Next.
    2. Enter your library card number and PIN.
    3. Accept the Terms and Conditions and then click Login.
    4. On the next screen, you will need to enter your Adobe ID. If you don't have one, select Automatically Generate an Adobe ID. The, click Activate
    5. You're now ready to explore cloudLibrary. To check out a book, you can either click on Featured or Browse to explore the collection or to discover titles through a search, click on the magnifying glass icon.  
    6. Click the Borrow button. (You may need to place a hold on popular items).
    7. Click Read to access and read the book now.
    8. To return your title early, go to My Books where you can view and manage books on your account.

    3. Search and select an eBook title.
    4. Tap the Borrow button. (You may need to place a hold on popular items).
    5. Tap Display to read the book now in your browser, or choose Download to read the book offline within in the app.  Downloaded books will sync across devices as long as you have the Odilo app installed.
    6. To read your downloaded title, tap the hamburger icon () and choose Downloads.  Tap the cover of the book you want to read.
    7. To return your title early, go to the Downloads page.  In the upper right-hand corner, tap the three vertical dots (  ) and choose Return Loan.

    Se Necesita

    • Una conexión a el Internet.

    Como Funciona

    1. Instale la aplicación Odilo. (Android; iOS, Kindle Fire, Windows Phone, Windows 8 & 10, Windows Desktop)
    2. Seleccione “Santa Clara County Library District” de la lista de bibliotecas disponibles.
