November is Alzheimer's Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness of the disease and show support for those suffering from it, as well as their caregivers. More than 6.2 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's. How can you show support? Go teal! On November 1st, more than 1300 structures will be "going teal" to raise awareness and show support. You can participate by lighting up your own office or house, or just by wearing teal. Why teal? Teal is the official color of the Alzheimer's Foundation of America because it has been shown to be a calming color according to color psychology.
If you're a caregiver for a loved one with Alzheimer's, the library has plenty of resources. You can listen to favorite music from the past by checking out CDs or streaming with Freegal and our various Music Online historical music databases. We also have a large selection of classic movies, both on DVD/Bluray and through Kanopy and Hoopla. You can explore family history with Ancestry or HeritageQuest and encourage them to tell stories of their past. If they like to knit and/or crochet, bring them to the library for regular meet-ups at our various libraries. With your library card, you also have access to research databases such as Health Library by Stay Well. And of course, we have books!
