To me, America is a land that deeply values individual freedom and independence more than anything else. This photograph of a lone silhouette facing the vast, golden sunset captures that quiet strength. It represents the American spirit of self reflection and the personal journeys we each take to find our own place under this endless sky at the end of everyday. To me, America means the freedom to pause and reflect on myself, watching the endless horizon which I know that there is always another opportunity waiting with the next sunrise.

This picture, titled America in the Lights, displays a 5x4 LED matrix depicting an illuminated American flag. The title of the photo, America in the Lights, not only reflects the illuminated American flag depicted in the photograph but also what America means to me: opportunity and innovation, which are qualities that make this country shine. Living in the heart of Silicon Valley, I wanted to highlight one way in which innovation and opportunity are reflected in our neighborhood, which is why I combined engineering and photography into this piece. As we celebrate America’s Semiquincentennial, this photo serves as a reminder of how America’s promise of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness continues to inspire and evolve.

"This image is a silhouette of the Marine Corps War Memorial, captured against the setting sun. The men work together to raise an American flag, reminding us of the sacrifices made by those who have served our country. Their effort and unity show how people can accomplish great things when they work toward a common goal. The dark silhouette of the memorial stands in contrast to the bright sky behind it, and to me, this symbolizes how America has always pushed forward, even in our darkest hours, because the sun will rise the next morning, just like our flag."
