Free COVID-19 Home Tests Available at Six Santa Clara County Library District Locations

Distribution of Rapid Antigen Tests and N95 Masks This Week Only

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF. – The Santa Clara County Library District (SCCLD), working in coordination with the County of Santa Clara and County Supervisor Joe Simitian, will be offering thousands of free COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Tests to residents from Wednesday, February 9 to Saturday, February 12. Outdoor, drive-through test distributions will take place at six Santa Clara County Library District locations. Please see the schedule below.

“Getting COVID-19 tests into the hands of our residents is important in helping to prevent the spread of the virus, especially if folks don’t know they’re infected to begin with,” said Supervisor Simitian, who is also a Library Joint Powers Authority Board Member and pushed for the free distribution of tests at libraries. “Making at-home tests available at our local libraries, which are trusted, convenient and familiar resources in the community, is just one of the ways the County is working to make these tests more accessible. My hope and expectation,” said Simitian, “is that this pilot effort will result in a continuing and expanded distribution effort through our libraries.”

Two free boxes of tests (four tests total) will be distributed per vehicle at each drive-through site. N95 masks will also be distributed. No appointments are necessary and tests are available on a first come, first served basis only at the drive-through locations. Distribution sites are designed for vehicles, but individuals walking or bicycling will be able to receive tests (two boxes per household).

“SCCLD libraries provide important resources and are natural, valued hubs in  our communities. We are proud to answer the call and hand out these much-needed COVID-19 home tests,” said County Librarian Jennifer Weeks. “By offering day, evening and weekend options for pick up at six of our library locations this week, we hope to help all residents, including those in the disproportionately impacted communities throughout Santa Clara County.”

The County recommends that antigen tests be used by those who have symptoms of COVID-19, and also to end isolation or quarantine periods for those who tested positive or were exposed to a person with COVID-19. If an antigen test comes back positive, it should be recognized as valid and applicable isolation guidance should be followed.
