September 15th marks the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month, which is a 30-day celebration meant to recognize the rich histories, indelible influences, and countless contributions made by our fellow Americans of Hispanic origin. This annual observation began as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson and was later expanded to a month-long celebration by President Ronald Reagan in 1988. This annual celebration runs from September 15 to October 15 because this timeframe marks the anniversaries of independence for several Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua on September 15, Mexico on September 16, and Chile on September 18.
