How do you know if your child is ready for kindergarten? It can be overwhelming to consider all the skills that will help make your new kindergartener successful in school, but the library is here to help. Whether your child has been in preschool, TK, or learning at home, the library has both online resources and in-person programs and hand-outs to support you while you guide your child through this next big transition of their lives.
We've collaborated with experts and educators to create six categories of skills your kindergartener will use to thrive. These six areas cover both the academic skills your little one has been building in their early years, as well as the social, emotional, and personal well-being skills they'll need to successfully collaborate in a classroom setting.
The six skillsets for your future kindergartener are:
- Health and Well-Being
- Early Literacy
- Social and Emotional Development
- Language and Communication
- Mathematical Thinking
- Science
On our Get Ready for Kindergarten page, you can find a checklist of important skills in each category, see upcoming library programs perfect for your preschooler, find recommended games and websites for little learners, and see resources for support if you believe your child may benefit from special education services. Additionally, you can visit your local Santa Clara County Library location to pick up a packet covering each skill set, with activities to try at home and a list of excellent books you and your future reader can share to learn more about each topic. Bring your completed activity packet back to the library to receive a special kindergarten prize!
