New Services Launching After Labor Day
SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF. – The COVID-19 pandemic has not affected everyone equally. This has further called attention to the digital divide in Silicon Valley, as more people are reliant on the internet to apply for stimulus checks, unemployment benefits, access digital resources, search for a job, support distance learning, and even for entertainment.
To help bridge this gap, the Santa Clara County Library District (SCCLD) has added Wi-Fi to the parking lots of the seven community libraries in Campbell, Cupertino, Gilroy, Los Altos, Milpitas, Morgan Hill, and Saratoga. In addition, SCCLD has installed Wi-Fi on both Bookmobiles to provide internet access to patrons when the Bookmobile is out in the community.
“Helping students with distance learning, finding family entertainment, accessing online resources, or working remotely in this trying time is hard enough,” County Librarian Jennifer Weeks said. “People should not have to worry about finding reliable internet access on top of everything else they are juggling right now.”
The free Wi-Fi will be available from the parking lots 24/7 for anyone to access the internet and SCCLD’s digital collection from the safety of their vehicles and/or outdoor spaces where they are able to social distance. A library card is not required to access the internet.
Signing up for a SCCLD eCard account is free and easy. This Library account, available to all ages, gives users access to SCCLD’s entire Online Library, available 24/7, including eBooks, audiobooks, downloadable movies, music, magazines, newspapers, international content, online learning, research, and more.
Also new starting after Labor Day, SCCLD is expanding curbside service availability at each location. With today’s busy lives, this new schedule allows patrons more flexibility to pick up holds during the day or evening. Curbside appointments can be made up to 10 days in advance.
