Labor Day marks the unofficial end to summer, coming three weeks before the season ends and autumn begins. Many of us take advantage of the long weekend to get away, enjoy the weather, or spend time with friends and family at a barbecue. This year’s Labor Day falls on Monday, September 7.
The origins of Labor Day date back to the 1880s. According to Britannica School, in 1882, two New York-based union officials proposed a holiday to celebrate the working class. The first Labor Day celebration was a parade through the streets of New York City drawing more than 10,000 marchers. The celebration spread to other states before becoming a federal holiday in 1894.
