Get a Sneak Peek of Los Altos Library’s New Courtyard Expansion Project

Additional Space Will Add 4,000 Square Feet for Public to Enjoy

WHAT:

The public is invited to an open house that will introduce the library courtyard expansion project. Guests will view the landscape plans and get a brief tour to view the outline of the courtyard site.

The courtyard will include an outdoor patio space for group activities, individual seating, and a storage area. The library has collaborated with the History Museum and other key stakeholders to ensure the Heritage Orchard and apricot trees are incorporated into the design elements, thus highlighting its beauty as well as educational and historical purposes.

The courtyard expansion project will be funded entirely by private donations. Los Altos Library would like to thank the Chou family and the Los Altos Library Endowment for its generosity in supporting this project.

WHO:

Santa Clara County Library District (SCCLD), Los Altos Library, Los Altos Library Endowment (LALE)

WHEN/WHERE:

Los Altos Library, 13 S. San Antonio Road, Los Altos, 94022

Orchard Room

Saturday, March 9

3 – 4 p.m.

Light refreshments will be served.

WHY:

Many residents, young and old, enjoy visiting the library. Today, special library programming such as author presentations, STEM programs and special children’s activities are held in the Orchard Room. Unfortunately, the venue can no longer serve the needs of the expanding community. Kids’ programs and event attendees are limited due to legal capacity constraints.

At the same time, use of the library continues to swell - last year alone more than 289,254 patrons visited the Los Altos Library, putting over 1,368,546 items into circulation. When complete, the Courtyard will add needed capacity for both formal programming as well as everyday patron visits in an exciting outdoor setting.

About the Santa Clara County Library District

The Santa Clara County Library District (SCCLD) promotes knowledge, ideas, and cultural enrichment. Founded in 1914, its collection includes more than 2.3 million books, videos, CDs, DVDs/Blu-rays, audiobooks, eBooks and extensive online resources accessible from anywhere with an internet connection.

For the last fifteen years, Library Journal has recognized SCCLD as one of America’s Star Libraries, and in 2022, SCCLD was rated a 5-Star library in their Index of Public Library Service, one of only five library systems in the United States with expenditures over $30 million given this honor. In 2014 and 2019, SCCLD won Innovator Awards from the Urban Libraries Council.  SCCLD also received a Challenge Award in 2019 from the California State Association of Counties and an Innovative Project of the Year Award (Large District) from the California Special Districts Association in 2020.

SCCLD includes two bookmobiles, an online library, seven community libraries and one branch library, serving the cities of Campbell, Cupertino, Gilroy, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Milpitas, Monte Sereno, Morgan Hill, Saratoga, and the unincorporated areas of Santa Clara County. In Fiscal Year 2022-23, SCCLD had over 360,000 library accounts, more than 1.1 million unique website visits, and a circulation of over 11 million items. We saw over 174,000 in program attendance.
