At the end of every year comes the avalanche of "Best of" lists, including of course, the Best Books of the Year. Magazines, newspapers, websites, bloggers, and retailers all weigh in, and it can be overwhelming and confusing. At SCCLD, we do the work for you and make it simple. We looked at over 20 "Best Books" lists, from Amazon to Good Reads to the New York Times and more. Every time a book is on a list, it gets a point. The books on the most lists have the highest scores, creating the ultimate Best Books list!
This year's best fiction book has the highest score we have seen in the 5+ years we've been doing this. James by Percival Everett was on a whopping TWENTY lists this year, as well as winning the National Book Award! Second place is Liz Moore's The God of the Woods with 16, followed closely by Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar at 15. For nonfiction, the top score goes to There's Always This Year by Hanif Abdurraqib, found on 11 lists. Second place is a tie: Knife by Salman Rushdie and The Light Eaters by Zoë Schlanger, both with a score of 9.
