SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF. – The Santa Clara County Library District (SCCLD) is hosting a series of programs around Hispanic Heritage, which takes place between Monday, September 15 and Wednesday, October 15. This is the annual celebration of the cultures and traditions of people whose ancestors come from Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain.
“This year’s programming around Hispanic Heritage ranges from discussions about great literature, hands on arts and crafts events that tie into cultural traditions, and a number of performances by talented artists,” said County Librarian Jennifer Weeks. “We invite everyone to take part and enjoy a sampling of what this wide and diverse community has to offer.”
Highlights of the month include a talk by Rock historian and author Richie Unterberger on “La Bamba: Latinx in Vintage Rock, Pop, and Soul” on Saturd
ay, September 20 at the Morgan Hill Library, a performance by Dance Folklórico at the Morgan Hill Library on Saturday, September 27, a virtual talk by educators from the Smithsonian Institution on Thursday, October 2 around their book Nuestra América, and performances by singer, songwriter and composer Diana Gameros on Saturday, October 4 at the Morgan Hill and Gilroy libraries, and Wednesday, October 8 at the Los Altos Library. Gameros, a Bay Area resident who was raised in Mexico, has been featured on KQED and NPR’s Tiny Desk concert series.
SCCLD’s collection features titles from Latino/a authors in both English and en español. Our librarians have also produced recommended fiction and nonfiction reading lists for children, teens and adults. Other digital resources include Audiobook and eBook source Libby, which has English and Spanish versions for kids and adults. Streaming TV and movie source Kanopy has a Hispanic Heritage Collection, and Magzter offers magazines from around the world, in English and Spanish.
South County residents will have another great opportunity to enjoy reading outdoors with a new bilingual English/Spanish StoryWalk® title starting in October at Community Park in Morgan Hill and a new location at Christmas Hill Park in Gilroy. Time to Play/Tiempo de Jugar by Eva Mastrogiulio is the featured book. StoryWalks® are a great way to introduce young readers to books, all while enjoying a healthy walk. Panels are spread around the park for families to enjoy them at their own speed.

In Calendar Year 2023, SCCLD had over 358,000 library accounts, more than 1.2 million unique website visits, and a circulation of nearly 11.3 million items. Program attendance was over 183,000.
