SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF. – The Santa Clara County Library District (SCCLD) encourages everyone to press “start” on an epic summer of reading and adventure with the Summer Reading Program, “Level Up at Your Library!” Dive into thrilling stories with unexpected twists, embark on library programs, and lose yourself in captivating stories filled with unforgettable characters. No matter your reading level or genre preference, there's a book waiting to help you level up your summer.
“Research shows that the summer break is a critical time where students can experience learning loss, but we can counteract that at the library,” said County Librarian Jennifer Weeks. “Level Up at Your Library encourages readers of all ages to unlock new worlds through the power of books, attend epic library events, and craft new memories. You really can reach new heights with help from the library!”
According to the California Library Association, opens a new window, Summer Reading programs help children and teens retain and enhance their reading skills over the summer and also provides a haven and community for readers. Plus, reading benefits adults by stimulating the brain, increasing vocabulary and sparking imagination.
SCCLD librarians have created enjoyable and entertaining booklists for children, teens, and adults (fiction and nonfiction). Residents who do not have an SCCLD library card are invited to get one at any of the SCCLD library locations. Your library card unlocks free online resources including coding games like CodeCombat.
SCCLD libraries are also hosting free and engaging programs throughout the summer. Highlights include watercoloring classes for kids, teens, and adults, special performances, virtual author visits, as well as a Science Heroes program for kids and teens. It’s easy to get into the game! Library patrons can register on Beanstack. On June 1, Level Up at Your Library kicks off! Participants can earn a prize for reading five books and completing an activity, so make sure to log it all on Beanstack. Level Up at Your Library runs from June 1 – July 31. Completion prizes will be available from August 1 – 31, while supplies last.
Also this summer, Morgan Hill and Gilroy Libraries are offering the Lunch at the Library program. Children ages 0 – 18 can receive free, nutritious meals starting Monday, June 9 between 12 – 1 p.m. (excluding holidays and while supplies last). Lunch at the Library runs through Friday, August 8.
