Local teens will compete in a live show for title of Best Group

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF. – Looking to prove that Santa Clara County’s got talent, the Santa Clara County Library District (SCCLD) will host a Battle of the Bands from 2 to 5 pm on Saturday, July 27 in the amphitheater of Milpitas Library. Teens ages 13 to 18 who are in bands of two or more are invited to take part in the competition, part of SCCLD’s 2019 Summer Reading program.  Update: The 2019 Summer Reading program has ended.  The associated pages and events are now closed.

“Our teens are both creative and expressive,” said County Librarian Nancy Howe. “We want to provide them with a platform to share their talents with their peers and the larger community.”

The idea for the event originated from SCCLD’s teen librarians, who wanted to give local bands a chance to perform in front of a large audience, with a professional sound system to better broadcast their music. Bands must play their own instruments throughout their performances to qualify.

Depending on the number of bands entering, an online voting contest may be used to determine who will perform at the live show, which will consist of five performances of up to 20 minutes each. A panel of judges will score each group according to their stage presentation, band synchronization, time management, song quality, stage management, and originality. The winners will receive cash gift cards as prizes, with $300 going to the first place finishers, $200 for second place, and $100 for third.

Parents or guardians must sign the entry form for teens to participate in this family event. Aside from noise levels, all other library behavior policies will apply.

Interested teens can visit www.sccl.org/BattleOfTheBands for more information and to download the application form. Bands have until June 21, 2019 to sign up. “For those about to rock, we salute you.” –AC~DC.  Update: The 2019 Summer Reading program has ended.  The associated pages and events are now closed.  For current and upcoming Teen contests, please visit https://sccld.org/contests/
