Users Are Encouraged to Stock Up on Materials  to Facilitate Moving to Brand New Library

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF. – Gilroy residents have just a few days to stock up on reading and other materials from their library, before it closes its doors for the next six weeks. They will be able to keep these items for an extended loan period without risking any penalties, until their library reopens at a new location on April 28, 2012.

The Gilroy Library temporary location at 7652 Monterey Street will close at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 17, 2012, in preparation for the move to the new Gilroy Library building at 350 W. 6th Street. Library staff is counting on users to stock up on materials, so they can also help transport thousands of items to the new, permanent building.

“Library users can help us tremendously if we have fewer items to move to our new permanent location,” said Lani Yoshimura, Gilroy Librarian. “We encourage everyone to take advantage of this extended loan period. Most items borrowed just prior to Saturday’s closing will be due in early May.”

For those who need to return books, the book drop off at the Library’s temporary site on Monterey Street will close on March 31. The book drop at the new site will be accessible in early April. Users also can return items to another Santa Clara County library, the bookmobile, or simply enjoy the extended loan period until the new library Grand Opening on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at 10:00 a.m.

“This is a fantastic benefit for Gilroy residents, especially for those looking for productive ways to spend time during spring break,” said County of Santa Clara Supervisor Mike Wasserman, District 1, Delegate for the County Library District Joint Powers Authority. “We encourage library users to stock up on materials they can enjoy or share with their families for the next six weeks, before their beautiful, brand new library opens.”

During the Gilroy Library closure, any holds users have on library materials will become temporarily inactive. Users will keep their position on the hold queue. Once the library reopens, holds will be automatically reactivated. Users will have the option to change their hold pick up location to another Santa Clara County Library.

The library reminds residents that the Bookmobile regularly stops in South County. Users can call
(408) 293-2326, ext. 3060. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
