Saratoga Library Chosen as one of 50 libraries Nationwide to Host

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF. – March 22, 2017 – Money, or even the lack of it, is part of everyday life.  Knowing how to manage money, including saving and spending, and learning to become financially smart is an important skill for everyone regardless of age. To help explain and teach tweens, teens and the adults in their lives about money, Santa Clara County Library District’s (SCCLD) Saratoga Library will host “Thinking Money”, a new traveling exhibition, from April 1 to May 1, 2017. Included with the exhibit is a series of interactive programs and activities that focus on financial topics including housing affordability, saving, financing college, spending and avoiding fraud.

“Money affects all of us, but how many of us have the information we need to make smart financial decisions?” asks Nancy Howe, County Librarian. “The exhibit teaches financial literacy in a way that is not only understandable, but fun,” she observes. Saratoga Mayor Emily Lo adds, “We are fortunate the Saratoga Library was chosen as one of 50 libraries nationwide to host this exhibit. Residents of Saratoga, Santa Clara County, and the entire Bay Area will benefit from the opportunity to interact with an exhibit on a topic of great importance to the continued health and vitality of our community and region.”

Visitors will learn key financial strategies and skills through an adventure-themed storyline, interactive iPad content and other fun activities. By exploring themes such as wants vs. needs, preparing for a rainy/sunny day, imagining a future self and avoiding financial fraud, families will have the chance to gain valuable insight into best financial practices.

The exhibit’s grand opening, scheduled for Saturday, April 1, 2017 at 2 p.m., is a Panel Discussion and Reception. Titled “Baydog Millionaire: Navigating the California Dream and the Future You,” the discussion will be moderated by KQED Newsroom host Thuy Vu as panel members discuss how the youth of today can best navigate the California Dream. Panelists include: Assemblyman Evan Low, Saratoga City Councilman Manny Cappello, Komal Ahmad of Copia, Inc., and Alex Lofton of Landed, Inc.

A variety of financial themed programs will be hosted by the Saratoga Library, located at 13650 Saratoga Avenue in Saratoga, Calif., throughout the month of April. All programs are free and open to the public. No reservations are required. For a complete listing of “Thinking Money” events, please visit: www.sccl.org/ThinkingMoney.

“Thinking Money” was created by the American Library Association (ALA) in partnership with the FINRA Investor Education Foundation. In April 2016, ALA and the FINRA Foundation announced 50 libraries nationwide to host the 1,000-square-foot exhibition. Saratoga Library was one of the 50 libraries selected and is the only library in Northern California to host this exhibit.
