Weekly Hours of Operation at Milpitas Library Expands to 71

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF. – November 23, 2016, Library access just became easier for the residents of Milpitas, CA thanks to a unanimous vote by the Milpitas City Council to allocate supplemental funding for the Santa Clara County Library District (SCCLD) Milpitas Library.   Library funding from the City of Milpitas had been eliminated in 2012 due to an economic downturn felt nationwide.

“Thanks to a boost in the economy I am extremely pleased that we are in the position to not only restore the funding needed for the extra library hours, but we can also increase the number of hours open to the public from previous years.  By going from 54 hours to an impressive 71 hours each week, the Milpitas Library will now offer the most open hours of operation of any  SCCLD library!” stated Jose Esteves, Mayor of Milpitas.

Beginning Tuesday, January 3, 2017, Milpitas Library’s new open hours will be:

Monday:       10 a.m. – 9 p.m.
Tuesday:      10 a.m. – 9 p.m.
Wednesday: 10 a.m. – 9 p.m.
Thursday:     10 a.m. – 9 p.m.
Friday:          10 a.m. – 7 p.m.
Saturday:      10 a.m. – 7 p.m.
Sunday:        10 a.m. – 7 p.m.

The new hours are reflective of the suggestions and wishes of over 500 Milpitas Library users who completed a SCCLD survey last spring. Their responses provided valuable input into various library offerings, including additional hours of operation should funds become available.

“I think Milpitas residents will be very excited to see these new hours,” said Dave Cortese, President, Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors.  “This will be especially beneficial to parents and their school age children who need access to the library throughout the school year, particularly on weekends.”

Funding from the City of Milpitas will allow SCCLD to add additional library staff during the extra open hours.  Approximately $470,000 was approved annually for the expanded hours and will be funded through the City of Milpitas’ Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT).   The additional open hours will provide residents more opportunities for visits to the facility and convenient access to library services.
A community library within the award-winning Santa Clara County Library District, the Milpitas Library is located at 160 N. Main Street, Milpitas, CA.
