Invitation is one of just 50 offered nationwide and only one in Bay Area
SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF. – The American Library Association (ALA) has recognized Santa Clara County Library District (SCCLD) Community Engagement Librarian Adrienne Keane as one of the nation’s up and coming librarians. Keane, who started at SCCLD in November of 2017, will take part in a project planning work group as part of the program, which includes a special peer-networking component. She may also serve on an ALA committee or workgroup after the yearlong program.
“There is no doubt that Adrienne is well on her way to having a distinguished career in the public library,” said County Librarian Nancy Howe. “She has quickly taken on and successfully led several programs for us across the County and proven herself to be an excellent collaborator.”
Keane is from Half Moon Bay and taught adult ESL before becoming a librarian. She played a key role in SCCLD’s efforts this year to connect patrons with County health resources, creating programs and resources for caregivers as part of Silicon Valley Reads, partnering with the Santa Clara County Public Health Department to organize fall programs on healthy eating, Medicare and prediabetes, putting together outreach events at local schools around healthy lifestyle habits, and developing resource guides about anxiety and depression as part of the first ever Mindquest Health Fair at Gilroy Library.
“I was thrilled to learn that I had been selected as one of this year’s Emerging Leaders,” said Keane. “I am fortunate to work for a library system that really supports professional development and encourages participation in programs like Emerging Leaders. I am looking forward to meeting other Emerging Leaders and learning more about ALA division and round table work. It is an honor to be in the company of these librarians who are all doing so much for their communities.”
Previous ALA project planning work groups have teamed up on topics such as advancing diversity in public libraries, establishing sister library relationships across the globe, and increasing collaboration with school libraries. Keane has a full slate planned for 2019, with a grant she helped obtain for a new program to support mental health and numerous other projects, in addition to her work with ALA.

During Fiscal Year 2017-18, SCCLD had more than 350,000 library account holders and welcomed 3.3 million visitors, who borrowed 9.3 million items.
