Jemisin takes this idea to its logical conclusion in a world where major cities are represented by human avatars. New York's soul becomes personified in the body of a teenage street kid. He, along with the representatives of the five boroughs, must fight an all-encompassing evil that seeks to snuff out the soul of the city before it fully awakens.
