Five Little Pumpkins

Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate.
(hold up fingers for pumpkins)

The first once said,
“Oh my! It’s getting late.
(wiggle thumb)

The second one said,
“There are witches in the air.”
       (wiggle pointer)

The third one said,
“But we don’t care.”
(wiggle tall finger)

The fourth one said,
“Let’s run and run and run.”
(wiggle ring finger)

The fifth one said,
“It’s Halloween fun.”
(wiggle pinkie finger)

Ooooooh went the wind.
(hold hands to mouth)

And out when the lights.
(clap hands to the word “out”)

And the five little pumpkins
rolled out of sight! (roll arms)

4. Early Literacy Tip    Listening and Speaking

Helping your child to put words to feelings develops vocabulary in a meaningful way.  Children can understand the words long before they can say them.  You can talk not only about your child's feelings, but about yours as well, especially at Halloween time with pumpkins and Jack-O-Lanterns and people in costumes that may frighten a child or make them feel uncertain or intriqued, but also unsure of them.

This is a good time to talk about how children feel about pumpkins with a face--Jack-O-Lanterns or other images associated with Halloween.  You can talk about how you felt as a child at Halloween.  This is a good time to talk to your child.  It's a fun time, but also a challenging time with lots of things happening--all at once.
