The Milpitas Book Discussion Group enjoyed a lively discussion last month when we gathered to share our impressions of Courting Mr. Lincoln. In Mr. Bayard's telling, we learn of all the gossip that was spoken of the friendship between Joshua Speed and Abraham Lincoln and the fact that the two slept in the same bed for the four years that they lived together. Mary Todd Lincoln has always been portrayed as somewhat of an eccentric character, and we learn that the core of her eccentric nature was the fact that she was an intelligent woman with a passion for politics and debate.
Mr. Bayard is a master storyteller, with all of his characters coming alive in his writing. A superb book to read, and a delight to discuss.
The Milpitas Book Discussion Group is currently meeting via Zoom and is open to all. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, March 24th at 7pm. Registration is required.
