Happy Pride Month! June 28 marks the anniversary of a then-routine police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in Greenwich Village, New York City. The raid became the catalyst for a five-day riot between the police and the Stonewall’s clientele. It was also an awakening of LGBTQ political power when they said enough to living in fear and secrecy, and also to harassment and brutality from the police. The momentum has only grown and expanded ever since.
This Pride Month, years of remarkable progress through hard-won victories for civil rights and dignity by LGBTQ Americans are cause for a celebration.
