April is the month that begins with April Fool’s Day. Most people know that April 1st is April Fool’s Day, an annual celebration where people play practical jokes on each other. However, did you know that there is a month dedicated to laughing?
National Humor Month was founded in 1976 by best-selling author and comedian Larry Wilde to increase public awareness of the therapeutic benefits of laughter. We have all heard the popular saying, “Laughter is the best medicine.” There are many ways that laughter is good for us; it has a positive effect on our body. Some of the benefits are: improved health, boosted morale, increased communication skills and the enrichment of the quality of one’s life. The use of humor as a tool to lift ailing spirits is growing and supported by scientific research. Scientific research indicates that the curative power of laughter and its ability to relieve debilitating stress and burnout may indeed be one of the great medical discoveries of our time.
