Atmospheric Mysteries

Want to immerse yourself in another place, another time, another life? Check out one these ebooks or audiobooks through Libby or RBdigital! This list highlights mysteries that take us to the beauty of India, the Scottish highlands, sun drenched Sicily, and grimy Victorian England. Join these sleuths (and one of India’s first female lawyers) as their adventures take them across the lines of class, religion, gender, and ethnicity to draw full pictures of the worlds they inhabited.

The Widows of Malabar Hill by Sujata Massey featuring Perveen Mistry one of India’s first female lawyers. As a woman she is allowed access to the widows of a large estate to handle inheritance claims but murder and intrigue soon follow. Beautiful descriptions of the people, places, and splendor of India.

Auntie Poldi and the Sicilian Lions by Mario Giordano featuring Tante Poldi, a retiree enjoying the sun of Sicily who can’t help but ask questions about the death of her handsome handyman. Romance, quirky characters, and descriptions of sun-baked beaches of Sicily.

A Rising Man by Abir Mukherjee featuring detectives Wyndham and Banerjee as they solve murders during the tension-filled times of the British Raj. A gritty tale that explores the political climate of India during the 1920s.

The Darwin Affair by Tim Mason featuring a cast of real characters from Victorian England including Charles Darwin and the Queen herself. An explosive plot to keep Darwin from receiving accolades for his work sends this thrilling mystery through the grimy allies of Victorian London.

The Italian Secretary by Caleb Carr featuring our favorite sleuth Sherlock Holmes who are tasked with finding a murderer in the supposedly haunted Castle of Holyrood.

Loch of the Dead by Oscar de Muriel featuring the wonderful pair of McGrey and Frey, this novel takes through the Scottish highlands for murder most strange with wonderful touches on the spiritualist movement and the supernatural. Not the first in the series but a great introduction to one of my favorite duos in current fiction.
